At Home Away From Home
It's always humbling to be adopted by a church parish for a day. Whenever we do a Sunday event, we often get brought in a day early so that we can play for the Saturday Vigil and Sunday services leading up to a concert. Its a great idea that allows the whole parish to be a part of our ministry and gives light to the vision of contemporary music in the Liturgy. As an added benefit, it ends up promoting the Sunday evening event.
Our recent visit to St. Pius X in Portland, OR was a perfect example of how a community welcomes us (strangers from the way south) into their Sunday life. They offered us their instruments and sound system (a Steinway grand, Roland V-tech digital board, etc.) and trusted us to do what we do. We selected songs from their songbooks to encourage participation and delicately approached each service in hopes of being accepted by the assembly gathered. And as is so often the case, we were welcomed warmly.
I consider it a blessing to be invited to churches like St. Pius and its always inspiring to see the unique qualities that make a parish what it is. The beauty of our faith exists beyond millions of people, characteristics, and idiosyncrasies and Christ unites and makes us very much at home anywhere in the world.
